Last Trains by New Mexico’s Semaphore Signals
In August of 2024, the New Mexico Department of Transportation completed a necessary conversion of its remaining semaphore signals to tri-light LED signals. While these sentinels of the Santa Fe Railway have been in place for nearly a century, it was time for modern replacements to come in. We venture into the Galisteo Basin, a depression in the earth between the southern end of the Rocky Mountains, and the Sandia Mountains, home of the longest tramway in the world. Near the movie ranch where 3:10 to Yuma with Christian Bale, and the first Thor movie with Chris Hemsworth was filmed to bring you the final days of these icons (the signals, not the actors…yeesh). (Seriously, there’s a movie ...

Can you prove that they’re not the most photographed? I mean, when you think about how much Otto Perry alone took photos of them, now, multiply that by the countless numbers of worldwide tourists that flock to this railroad to ride, and you can see how they could be potentially the most photographed steam engines… yes that includes Union Pacific’s ‘Big Boy’ (hey, 473 had "Little Boy" chalked on...

The Return of Three Steam Trains On The Silverton
I don’t get it
Beautiful job capturing history
Why doesn't this 1,000 likes? This is awesome!!! I LOVE the Titanic music!😂
You really are a Big Diehl. I know it’s older footage, but I’m so stoked to see some west coast SP whaleback action. At 3:06, No. 18 does some 10 wheeler things and HUSTLES. (Hammered sad whistle and all.) To quote the late Jimmie Rodgers, who was a real Boomer, “I can see a train comin’ down the railroad track…and I love to heeeeah the bahk od that old smokestack.” She has a bark indeed.
Thanks for the historic documentary. Been a fan of old Santa Fe T2 semaphores since the Santa Fe RR retired them in Texas back in 1980. Well done, interesting, informative.
Steam engine puffing out black smoke is an exercise of fiction, lore and legend that just won't go away.
There's another part of these signals that's extremely rare, the 'telegraph' wires running them. There are very, very few places left where the signals are still run by open frame wires. Bell Telephone was replacing open frame wires with bundled cables at least 110 years ago. It's a miracle that any are left at all!
In the early aughts I worked for SBC in Chicago. Occasionally I would get a look at the phone cable maps. Among other information these included the year they were installed. I saw two in the Austin neighborhood that were installed in 1912 and 1914.
The end of another era in American Railroad I’m happy to say that a lot of the former Santa Fe semaphore signals have been donated to various museums even the last mainline wigwag signal resides at a museum specifically the Colorado Railroad Museum
What are they being replaced with ? LED signals ?
They getting replaced with green energy, Electric battery powered train engines. 🤡
They were replaced with brand new Tri-light signals (with LED’s) and CTC control.
Did you put flowers? Lol
Oregon Coast scenic railroad ?
Yes
No more shoveling coal sadly. Just another tourist trap now.
Have the semaphores at Wagon Mound, Levy and Colmor been replaced yet?
No, they're still there, but their fate is not controlled by the State of New Mexico like these were. I see them twice a week usually, and there's been no sign of an upgrade to them yet.
That was me waving at you guys out the back on the final train to see these semaphores, train #3 on August 16th. I headed to the back window to see these semaphores because I knew they were there, and had no idea it was their last day of operation.
Would you mind if I made an edit with your footage to a quote from Little Engines & Big men specifically "Listen to that locomotive bark for the stars"?
Can you back channel me through one of my other social channels? I’d like to hear more
Nice work!
Thanks!
Sure am glad I got them while I could. Long live the NMRX semaphores!
🙏🍻
More relics gone, sad to see them go. Hopefully the ones on the Raton will hold strong for a few more years.
While I hate to see them go, most of me is glad to have something more reliable in place.
Shoveling coal no longer
that pure pollution coming out the back. 🤮
A beautiful set of locomotives
Man that shot is like a slice from another time-or another time that marched on and nothing changed haha. (And you never can go wrong with some C.W. McCall action.
What this just a muesum demonstration, or is the BLC locomotive is revenue logging service?
This was a paid charter that we participated in, so that’s the reason for the freight cars… we paid for them. But you can ride behind this locomotive on the Santiam Excursion Train
@@Big_Diehl I see they have some big trees there, I come from a old logging state, we don't see many of those type of trees much anymore around here.
Listen to those little locomoties bark for the stars
I wonder why this Silverton video got way more views than mine
I have a bigger subscription base through creating videos for RUclips for 15 years. Give it time and it will come just keep making quality content.
That is such a great framed shot, coming out of town through the brush and under the gate. And the double-heading around the bend really brings to life the line from Blue Yodel No. 5: “I see that train comin’ down the railroad track…And I love to hear the bark of that old smokestack”
I finally got around to watching this. A beautifully poetic intro, and another beautiful video overall. I'm more a fan of the Balwin Mikados, (after the K27s were "Mudhens", I call the K28s "Ugly Ducklings" 😂), but I do still love them and their history. I do actually have Jerry Day's book too! Excellent work as always Mr Diehl. 👍
You do really great work, William! I never get tired of watching your videos.
Beautiful, i have videos of D&SNG on my channel
I was there. With you. Standing right there. Remember?
#488 is always been my favorite!
A-LA-MO-SA
I thank God for trains, they are one of the top inventions of all time.
A truly underrated channel!
Thanks! 🙏. I try
What a shame that #481 is turned into oil. You could have left it for winter trips. A million dollars to convert. This RR, be making lots of money to convert it. It’s a shame you did this. Glad Cumbers and Toltec still have almost all coal trains. 🚂. Cumbres is a better ride too. I’ll never ride this train ever again.
No, it’s not a shame. Are you saying they should waste money by parking a valuable piece of equipment because they can only run it for three months a year, using up valuable time on its 15 year boiler ticket? It was stupid lucky the snow even happened for these last runs, as 481 had to have a diesel because of how dry it was in March (the snow in the video was literally the first time it snowed in a month). The scenery in Chama, will different isn’t anymore scenic, and the railroad is in no way any better run than the D&S, plus, they’re converting to oil for the exact same reasons.
Atleast the El Segundo/Lee Ranch Mines are still around that still load up Coal Shuttles. Nice Video of the Last Days of the Escalante Western.
From my understanding Lee Ranch is mothballed and only El Segundo has seen real service for the better part of the last decade.
@@Big_Diehl Yeah the El Segundo Loadout sees about 99% Of that Coal Traffic since very rarely do they send A train to the Lee Ranch Loadout. There has only been one train to the Lee ranch Loadout this year and even then the El Segundo Mine doesn’t see too much nowadays.
Amazing video , the shots from the caboose really add to the show . I'm from Australia and seeing your videos make me want to get a passport and visit . Well done and thanks .
Glad you enjoyed it! It’s a great ride, between it and the Cumbres and Toltec it’s worth the trip (I’d guess). I know a D&S Employee who ‘reverse commutes’ to see your ‘Puffing Billy’ down there.
@@Big_Diehl It's a small world I was paid staff at Puffing Billy for about year , 38 years ago as a general dogs body . Thanks for the reply and the videos they are appreciated . Geoff .
Mr diehl I bet your a steam lover just like me because I’m a steam enthusiast
A fantastic video and a journey back in time to the era of narrow-gauge steam locomotives over 100 years ago up to the present day. In a magnificent landscape of Colorado and New Mexico. Thank you for the beautiful video and your excellent work. Best regards from Germany
Impressive stuff. Always visually stunning. How did you get all the footage especially from the bit of the journey before Hermosa and ride the train at the same time. Were you working as a team with other videographers?
@ThreeFootFilms, everything was shot by me alone. We were allowed to jump on at Rockwood as part of the maneuvers involved going straight to Rockwood and then backing to Granite Point for the run by.
@@Big_Diehl Even more impressive then. You must be quite nimble on your feet.
GOOD STUFF!
Breathtaking stuff!! It was fantastic event that was easily the best photo charter I’ve done to date! And it was great to meet you there too!
I’m pretty sure the only year 473 hasn’t operated was in 2020, but don’t quote me on that. I just know she was being converted to be an oil burner between 2020 and 2021. Anyway if anybody has been living under a rock, 476 was backdated for a movie shoot back in May, and idk for sure if she has it now in August, but she had a diamond stack and box headlamp, and in addition to that a D&RGW 5 chime (formerly used on the one and only 486) added in early June.
Also, 476 was given that diamond stack for the 50 years ago in the snow charters in early 2023.
35 minutes of moving postcards, great job and outstanding subject,,now x476 south to Santa fe, would be mind blowing
